On November 8, 2005 Sharon Fields was elected to serve on the East Orange City Council immediately taking office to complete the unexpired term of former Councilman Zachary V. Turner and was re-elected to a fill the seat for a full 4-year term in November, 2007.  She serves as the Chairwoman of the Council’s Health, Education and Welfare Committee. She is currently employed by the Essex County Department of Welfare as an Ombudsman serving as the liaison between the agency and its clients.

Prior to being elected to public office, Councilwoman Fields was a well known political activist and community servant for many years. She has worked for the Fourth Ward on health issues, tenant rights and social services. She is the Chairwoman of the Fourth Ward Democratic Municipal Committee and was a member of the East Orange Rent Leveling Board and the East Orange Parking Authority. Councilwoman Fields has served as a volunteer for the former East Orange Falcon Football Team and the Offender Aid and Restoration Project for Children. She is active with the East Orange Police Athletic League Program, local tenant advocacy activities and pre-school education initiatives.
