 THE VOTING PROCESS

 

The right to vote is an important civil responsibility.

Qualifications for Voter Registration:

You must be eighteen (18) years of age
a United States citizen
a New Jersey resident
a County Resident for at least thirty (30) days

When to Register?

Registration of a new voter is required prior to the
twenty ninth day preceding the election.

Voter Registration in New Jersey is Permanent

If you move into a county at least twenty-nine (29) days prior to
an election, you must file a Change of  Address notice with the
County Board of Elections.  You must re-register if you have
not voted in any election for the past four (4)  consecutive years.

ELECTION DATES
 

If I have never voted in a Primary Election before, may I vote?

Yes, but you must state your party preference at the polls on
Primary Election day.

How do I change my party affiliation?

A Party Declaration form must be filled out.  Party Declaration
forms must be received by the Essex County Board of Elections no
later than 50 days prior to the primary Election.   form may be
obtained from the Essex County Clerk or the Municipal Clerk.

PROVISIONAL BALLOT

On Election Day you may vote via Provisional Ballot at your new district;
if you currently registered in a county and move to another address within
the county and neglect to file a change of address or; if you fail to respond
to a confirmation notice mailed by the Board of Elections.

POLLING SITES

If  recently moved into the City how can I
find out where my polling place is located?

You can contact the City Clerk's Office.

What are the voting hours?

The polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Help America Vote Act has brought nation-wide focus to elections and voting and some new changes will take effect in June 2004.  The State of New Jersey has implemented  many measures intended to educate voters regarding the election process and is committed to making the election process accessible to all citizens.
 

The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls that imprison men because they are different from other men.

ABSENTEE BALLOTS

I can't appear in person to register to vote.  Can I register by mail?

Yes, by completing a mail-in registration form.

Qualifications for Absentee Ballot

Out of State on Election Day
Illness or physical disability
Military Service
Residence attendance in college
Observance of a religious holiday

When is the last day to apply for an absentee ballot?

If mailed, no more than seven days before the election.

When are the Primary and General Elections?

The primary election is held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June.
