CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING PREVENTION PROGRAM
143 New Street
East Orange, NJ 07017

Telephone: 973-266-5489

Lead poisoning testing for children ages 1 - 5 years.  Appointment needed.

This program has been established statewide due to the ages of the dwellings in urban areas.  The affects of lead poisoning have been devastating on young children affected.  The program emphasizes community education and awareness being the mainline of prevention.  Comprehensive case management is done through nursing and environmental.

State regulations mandate the authorities of the health departments to be accountable for lead surveillance.  In cooperation with the physicians, insurance case managers, clients and community resources, this program attempts to provide services to a growing population of poisoned children and young parents.  Even in the City plan of urban renewal, lead poisoning is occurring just from the construction and demolition.

Presently, at the East Orange Health Department of Health and Human Services, uninsured clients are able to acquire screening services.  Our program physician, Dr. Charles Osei, manages the child health clinic weekly, which is a source of screenings done by an intravenous certified clinician registered nurse.  Our lead inspector monitors the homes and apartments for exposures, along with maintaining open communication with the landlords.  He also educates homeowners and parents as to State regulations on how to deal with lead poisoning.  The staff participates in health programs (i.e. health fairs, daycare education, etc.) and assists in establishing the importance of  being an informed community.

Our success story will be our children being totally safe from potential lead poisoning.
