The Department of Property Taxation is the office of the City Assessor.  The City Assessor is responsible to the State of New Jersey, Division of Taxation, and the Essex County Board of Taxation for proper administration of the office under the rules and regulations promulgated by the Division and by applicable laws.  The City Assessor is responsible to the City for the professional direction and administration of the department, the proper use and expenditure of funds allotted through the budget process and the proper conduct and assistance to the Administration.  The City Assessor is responsible to the taxpayers for the fair and equitable assessment of their property. 

The primary function of the Tax Assessors office is to value all real property within the city boundaries for property tax purposes.  The office also keeps records of ownership, mailing addresses, tax rates, assessment levels and sales information.  The City Assessor is the City’s agent on tax appeal matters, exemptions for charitable, educational, and religious organizations; and deductions for seniors, veterans, disabled persons and widows of veterans and disabled persons.  The office is also responsible for the inspection of all properties and updating files on new construction, renovations, alterations, additions and demolitions as well as, sales, appeals and other reasons concerning the proper valuation and assessment of property.
