East Orange Recreation Department
Distributes Food Baskets to Needy Families

EAST ORANGE, NJ---Throughout the year, the East Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs sponsors, hosts and facilitates numerous and varied community programs open to City residents. In that tradition, this year marks the eleventh year the department has sponsored its annual campaign to help needy families during the holiday season.

The department, who in the past has sponsored pancake breakfasts, where toys were distributed to neighborhood families, revised their efforts, but was still able to honor their tradition of giving and bringing holiday cheer. Thanks to the generous contributions of local participants, the Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs was able distribute food packages to nearly 100 deserving families. .

At the Civic Center on Greenwood Avenue this past Friday, December 18th, Recreation staff distributed food baskets of unprepared food items including meats, starches and fresh vegetables worth approximately $200 each, providing enough food to feed a family for more than a week. “This year’s efforts exceeded our own expectations,” said Recreation Program Developer Stanley Edwards, who helped facilitate the initiative. “Because of the economy, we were not anticipating being able to feed this many families, but we are so grateful to our sponsors who helped make this possible.”

Mayor Bowser stated that, “During these tough economic times, it is important that communities come together. I’m truly proud that as a community we have been able to work cohesively not just during this important season of giving, but throughout the year our residents, business owners, group association, and others have joined to help those in need. We’re blessed to have this type of neighborhood bond happening in our City.” The program was made possible through donations from several collaborative community sponsors, including PSE&G, Comcast, ShopRite, East Orange General Hospital, RPM Development, Printing Delight, Western Beef, Orange Valley Hardware, and Dr. Antonacos from East Orange Eye Care.
