EAST ORANGE…Since hearing about the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, Mayor Robert L. Bowser, former President of the National Conference of Black Mayors, has been coordinating a national and international response with the National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM) and the World Conference of Mayors, Inc. leadership to aid the victims and their families. The Organizations have already assisted by providing earth-moving equipment (from John Deere) and water (from United Water) to Haiti. (Both John Deere and United Water are national partners of the NCBM).

Along with these organizations, on a local level, the City of East Orange has established a Haiti Relief Task Force and is working in concert with the local Haitian Clergy to coordinate efforts with other municipalities. At this time the City is accepting monetary donations. Checks and money orders can be made out to “The City of East Orange/Haiti Relief Fund” and sent to the Mayor’s Office of Public Information located at City Hall, 44 City Hall Plaza, East Orange, New Jersey 07019.

The City will collect water, tents, first aid medical supplies, baby formula, diapers, non-electric can openers and toiletries, and wet wipes. These items can be dropped off at the Office of Emergency Management, 402 Springdale Avenue in East Orange. All items will be picked up and delivered by the National Conference of Black Mayors, who just held their annual conference in Haiti in December 2009 along with 68 mayors from Haiti. Due to a very clear assessment of the current needs by those on location in Haiti, at this time, only items requested as priority will be accepted by the Office of Emergency Management.

Mayor Robert Bowser of East Orange announced today that he is also calling for all of the residents of the City to join in a moment of solidarity for our brothers and sisters of Haiti. He is asking for all members of the East Orange family to turn off all electrical appliances Sunday night from 7:00 pm to 7:01 pm and observe a moment of silence and reflection on the tragedy in Haiti.

In addition, the East Orange City Clerk’s Office will assist people trying to travel to Haiti by obtaining expedited passports. The City Clerk’s office will be open for passport assistance Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
