EAST ORANGE…City
officials welcomed a group of 11 students to City Hall on Monday, February 23rd
for “Job Shadow 2009” in partnership with the East Orange Board of Education.
Seniors with a variety of career interests ranging from engineering to business
and the arts were chosen to “shadow“ staff from the Mayor’s Office, City Clerk
and Council Offices, Property Taxation, Property Maintenance, Finance, Public
Works, Policy, Planning, Development and Law Departments to see first hand how
city government operates. The plan is give students an opportunity to implement
what they learned in the classroom, as well as a chance to gain more information
on their careers of choice. “We are instituting this pilot program for the first
time this year,” said School Guidance Counselor Lillian Roy-Orr as she
accompanied the students into City Hall. “I also wanted to recognize Christine
Harris, who is Job Developer at East Orange Campus High School,” Ms. Orr went on
to say. “She helped make this program today as a kick off to our year-long
initiative possible.” The initiative is part of the national Groundhog Day Job
Shadow Program.
The pilot program consisted of students at two other locations throughout the
City, including students with Tri-city People’s Corporation on Washington Street
and the East Orange Day Care Center on Tremont Avenue.
