Bicycle Auction in East Orange
EAST ORANGE, July 12 ~ Last Saturday, the City held an auction of abandoned and unclaimed bicycles from the Police Department to offer residents a chance to get a good deal on a selection of bicycles.
The auction was held in the rear parking lot of Police Headquarters on South Munn Avenue, where approximately 200 people came to take advantage of a bargain. A variety of bikes were available, including small bikes perfect for kids, 10-speed models, mountain bikes, and even a motorcycle. Bids started at $5.00, and went as high as $200.00. Several children present were able to walk away with a working bike for as little as $10.00, bought with their own money.
City Auctioneer and Aide to the Mayor William McNeely and Sgt. Michetti facilitated the auction, as over 100 bikes went home with new owners. All bicycles were sold “as is,” the majority needing minimal repairs, such as brake realignments, new seats, or tires. All sales totaled $2,500.00 as collected by the City’s Finance Department, with the proceeds going into a general City fund.
