In observance of April as “Child Abuse Prevention Month, “ the Department of Health and Human Services is sponsoring a program to help make the East Orange community aware of the valuable resources available to assist families and children.

This event, entitled “Stronger Families Through Healthy Connections,” will highlight the non-profit agencies in East Orange that serve to strengthen families. Rochelle Evans, the City’s Health Officer is presenting Certificates of Appreciation from Mayor Robert L. Bowser and the City Council to these active agencies in recognition and appreciation for their continued dedication to the East Orange community. This program is also in partnership with The Family Success Center.

The agencies represented will give brief overviews of their services, and staff from our own municipal departments will also be present to provide updates about upcoming events and programs, including:

¨      The Department of Recreation will talk about the Memorial Day Parade, summer programs and the Farmer’s Market;

¨      W.I.C. (Women, Infants and Children’s Program) will register young mothers for food stamps and voter registration;

¨      Training and Development staff will inform about summer jobs for our teenagers;

¨      Isaiah House, Planned Parenthood, The Family Success Center, Substance Abuse, local Day Care Centers, the East Orange General Hospital, DYFS, East Orange YMCA and YCS (Youth Consultation Services) will be there along with many other family-focused agencies providing literature and information.

A presentation of planting pin wheels (the symbol for child abuse prevention) will take place, and light refreshments will be served.

Ms. Evans believes this introduction/reminder of family-focused resources in East Orange will help many parents make informed, healthy and safe decisions in planning activities for their families this summer.
